"The Shining" (1980)

"The Shining" was a movie I've been desperately been trying to watch this month. There have been so many pop culture references to the two girls, the trike riding boy and of course "Here's Johnny!" phrase that I knew I had to see it. But I've never knew what "The Shining" was all about. Will I be scared out of my mind? Psychologically disturbed? Or just plain bored from the slow pacing of Kubrick's style as a director?

Poll Position: "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999)

The movie poster doesn’t give much away when talking about “Eyes Wide Shut”. And I rather go into a movie without any prior knowledge of what the movie is all about. So I was extremely shocked when I saw that Kubrick directed this film near the end of the movie. Doesn’t seem like a movie he would do, but after really thinking about it. It makes sense, a lot of his style is apparent in here some of them good and some of them bad. But let me dive straight into the details after the jump.

Poll Position: Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Last week's poll was a collection of Nicole Kidman films, and we asked you to pick which one we should watch. Eyes Wide Shut won out over The Hours by just a few votes. What I didn't expect when I sat down to watch this movie was exactly how much of Nicole Kidman I was about to see! Directed by Stanley Kubrick, the movie also stars Tom Cruise, and actually he's the focus of the movie as he goes through one crazy night. I haven't been a big fan of the past few Kubrick movies I'd seen, so I was slightly concerned. My full thoughts after the jump.

Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Today I choose to knock another classic, or should I say cult classic, off my list of shame. A Clockwork Orange was a book I had to read in school, but to be honest I never really liked it. Unless I'm remembering it wrong, I've been told by friends that the movie is much better and quite good. It's really only been my feelings towards the book that kept me from seeing the movie, but I figured I'd just get it out of the way today. On this very blog I've watched two other films by Kubrick, those being 2001 A Space Odyssey and Dr. Strangelove. I had mixed reactions to both, hit the jump to see what I thought of this one.

Dr Stranglelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

I picked today's movie on a total whim. No rhyme or reason to it, I just had it at hand and popped it in. Many consider it a classic, so I knew I had to get around to it eventually. The full title is Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1964, it's safe to say that you don't really have any idea what you're about to get into when you start watching it, much like 2001: A Space Odyssey. This film, however, is not only a commentary on war, but also a comedy. I'd heard it was very funny, but I actually don't like hearing things like that since it can get your hopes up. Hit the jump to see if it lived up to the image in my mind or if it just bombed.

Poll Position: 2001 A Space Odyssey (1968)

Our first poll has come and gone and the winner was 2001: A Space Odyssey directed by Stanley Kubrick. I've never actually sat and watched 2001, but being that it's such a classic, I've certainly seen a lot of it in clips and references over the years. I was really excited going in to this movie; finally I was going to sit myself down and get to witness one of the most classic space sci-fi films of our time. I mean, it's 2 hours and 28 minutes long! There's GOT to be so much cool content and great dialog in this movie! Right? Right?! Find out why this movie reminds me so much of James Cameron's Avatar, along with my thoughts, after the jump.
