Force Fed Films: Moon

Today’s force fed films for me is “Moon”. Jim recommended me this movie quite spontaneously, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Hell, I didn’t even IMDB this flick and was going in blind. But eventually the movie got going and I started to like what I was seeing. Basically the whole movie is on the moon and I presume in to the future, like year 2050. And I tried real hard not to compare this to 2001: A Space Odyssey, so don’t you folks worry, full details after the jump.

Firstly, the basic premise of this movie is that Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is a one man crew on this space station on the moon. His job is to monitor, retrieve and send to Earth He3 which is the main source of power on the Earth. He is accompanied by his robot helper GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey). We join him during his last 2 weeks of his 3 year contract on the moon, and Sam seems to be getting weaker and starts to hallucinate. During one of his trips to a computer controlled rover to retrieve some of this He3, he hallucinates and sees something which distracts him, causing him to crash into the remote rover. He wakes up back in his space station being awakened by GERTY. And this is exactly where the movie gets amazing and trips me out. The story is interesting and the twist and turns the plot has really kept me on the edge, which was a lot better than 2001.
It's Sam wondering WTF is going on.
There aren’t many characters in this movie, besides Sam and GERTY. And I must say I do love how GERTY is in this movie. He is the best friend that is always there for you, and does anything to help you out. And he has a certain charm to him that made me really like him. Sam on the other hand, I didn't really like his character, I am not sure why though. But he felt awkward throughout the whole movie, but that was my opinion.

Lastly, I want to talk about the visual, to summarize it shortly it was AMAZING. The long version is that it was AAAAMMMMAAAAZZZZIIINNNNGGGGG. No seriously, I really liked a lot of the exterior shots. They looked beautiful, all the particle effects and physics, just gorgeous. Even the inside of the space station was pretty well done, really believed the setting.

Overall, I liked the movie. It wasn’t amazing or anything special, but it was good entertainment. It was way better than 2001 and didn’t make me fall asleep. Visuals were nice, characters were interesting and the story was pretty good. So check it out.

Also, not available for streaming on Netflix Canada, but I am quite sure it is available for Netflix USA.

  1. Moon is so awesome. I thought Sam Rockwell put on a great performance given what his character goes through in the film. The characters need to be good for a movie like this.

  2. This movie didn't blow me away either when I saw it, but thinking back on it, it was really damn good. Hard to believe it's just an indie movie too! Only $5 mill budget!
