So today I am giving you my opinions on Martin Scorsese's drama Taxi Driver. Which stars a young Robert De Niro and a even younger Jodie Foster. I tend to avoid drama movies, just because they aren't really interesting to me, but this movie was quite ... interesting. How interesting you ask? De Niro drives a taxi, Foster is a child prostitude and Peter Boyle (Frank from Everybody loves Raymond) is in the film. That interesting, click more for what I thought.
The basic premise of this movie is that Travis Bickle is a Vietnam War veteran that has a mental disorder, in which he has trouble sleeping, and needs to distract his anger on how New York city is such a horrible place to live in. He takes a taxi driving job during the night shift to help himself, but only angers himself when he sees the worst of New York city. The "dirty streets" as he calls it, is filled with drugs, violence and prostitution. During one of his fares, he meets Iris who is a child prostitute and at this very moment Travis knows he needs to save this girl. Now if I say anymore, I am scared I might ruin the movie a bit, so I'll stop now.
Jodie Foster and Robert De Niro
I found this movie to be long, and really drags out to a point. I understand Scorsese does this to build up the tension for the final scene of the movie. But damn, some parts get me real bored and I start to get distracted. But these are the main reason I usually push drama movies away. Also, I notice that 1970's wasn't a time of bras, I know this is a random point to bring out. But holy jeez its like watching water balloons that are half filled which have been taped to all the females' chest.
But enough about what I didn't like. What I liked far out weighted what I didn't. In short, this movie is fulfilling. Great story, amazing build up and perfect conclusion. The movie doesn't leave me hanging, wondering WTF just happened and everything fits together, like a 1000 piece puzzle, complex but satisfying. And the acting of De Niro was amazing, you see the progression of his anger throughout this movie and you cheer him on, even though his methods are questionable to say the least. And seeing a 12 year old Jodie Foster undo De Niro's belt is quite disturbing.
To summarize, this movie is done real well, with a complete story and great acting. Though the one movie I can compare this to is "Falling Down", and I liked "Falling Down" more. Also, you guys should see "Falling Down", super fun movie.
Thank you for reading, love to read your thoughts.
