On this lazy Sunday I watched “8mm”, starting the amazing Nicolas Cage and Joaquin Phoenix. I know right? Weird duo, but this movie is weird itself so I guess the movie reflects on the cast. Now, I am not sure why I wanted to see this movie, I guess it was because it had Nicolas mothershaggin Cage in the movie. I tell you what kids, this guy is the badass and I am not saying he is good looking but he has this certain je ne sais quoi. Pardon my high school French, but seriously this movie delivered what I was not expecting and made me twitch in ways I did not know I could twitch. Click more for why.
The basic story of this movie is simple: Cage is a P.I detective and is hired by some old woman to inquire about her late husband’s weird 8mm film he has in his locked vault. The film is some f-ed up snuff film, no Cartman’s mom isn’t in it, and it shows a man in S&M gear brutally beating, raping and killing a young girl. And for some weird f-ed up reason the old woman needs to know if this is real or not. So Cage puts on his cape (not really), gets into his fabulous car (not so fabulous) and sets on his way to find out this mystery. See what I mean, weird story but very enthralling indeed.
Phoenix and Cage being best of bros.
I really don’t want to say anymore of this story as it is pretty good. As good as the acting. Now I know that Cage gets bashed on for his lack of emotions in his acting, but I must say, he was quite good and portrays a different character than I am used to. Now on the other hand, I am not a fan of Phoenix at all, just like the state I find him dry and a prick (cactus joke). But he was good in this movie; he plays a rough and tough cashier at a local adult book store. He is hired by Cage to help him out with finding the killers of the dead girl, and because Phoenix is in the ‘business’ who else is better than him to get the inside scoop. Other actors such as Mr Soprano himself James Gandolfini and Peter Stormare were in this movie, but in a lesser extent.
Overall I liked this movie, it had Cage, an exciting story and it was something that was different. It did show a lot of graphic detail I wasn’t prepared for but it did its job to shock and awe. If you guys want to get freaked out, crept out and Caged out, watch this flick. But have a light dinner before; you don’t want to vomit up a 3 course meal after seeing this film.
I remember this movie being so intense, not at all what I was expecting when I first saw it.
