Not sure what to make of this movie, I will start off with what was done well in this movie. I did love the special effects of the movie, the water effects were amazing and the movie made me feel wet, uncomfortably wet. Secondly, I thought the acting of all the characters were well done and convinced me of the characters they were portraying. Overall, I must say that this movie really made me feel that I was immense in all the scenes and made me feel that I was in with the crew.
Mark Walberg and George Clooney manning the ship through some rough waves.
What I was on the teeter totter was the story and the pacing of the movie. It felt long, the movie ran for a bit over 2 hours and with the inconsistent pacing, I really felt the 2 hours pass by. Just like the waves, the story has a lot of highs and lows and I think that lays the biggest problem, there is no clear climax of the story. Most movies follow the sequence of: Beginning: where the characters and story comes by, Middle: A problem arises and the heroes need to solve it, and Ending: The problem is resolved, good or bad, and the movie is done with some loose ends tied. Yes other movies deviate from that basic formula and do good, but some fall hard, for example this movie. The movie starts off real slow and really doesn't introduce the characters all too well. And as the movie goes on, the problems that the crew faces are introduced very quickly but the scenes of them resolving the problems really dragged on. This really bored me. And the ending felt very anti-climatic. I was left scratching my head asking myself, "Is that all?"
Overall, I liked the movie ... kind of. I am not sure if I would recommend or even watch this movie again. There really isn't anything remarkable about this movie, it isn't Walberg's or Clooney's best movie and nothing really shines in this movie. I was really hoping for this movie to be a feel good movie, and was let down.
