Okay, so I want to get the bad out of the way first. The special effects were horrible, I mean the worst I have seen since Mega Shark. 1999 called, they want their special effects back. Another thing was this movie was way too long, it spanned 2 hours and 51 minutes. THAT IS INSANE, it had two parts to it and it was totally not needed. And the main reason this movie was too long was because they tried to fit in a billion things in this movie, it had horrible editing and a lot of filler material. The story was another reason why it was so long, they tried to fit in 3 stories into this movie, and only one was actually interesting. I will go further into it a bit later. The last thing that bummed me out was the assumption that our sun has the mass to explode into a supernova, that is f-in moronic, and that wasn't even the only science related flaw I had in this movie.
Luke Perry, go back to 90210
Like I promised you before, I was going to tell you about the story or stories as I would call it. Story #1 is what I assume the main story, some scientist is going crazy after he discovers his equations point out the sun is older than we thought and it is going to explode in the matter of weeks, with hell literally raining on Earth. The scientist goes crazy and leaves for Hawaii or something to rest on his final days on Earth. He picks up this horny old MILF who is a bartender (and maybe the only other person on this beach) and they get it on and fall in love. Shortly after, a fireball falls from the heavens and burns them all to smithereens.
Story #2 is about Luke Perry's wife who is scared for her life, and I find out later in this movie she has witnessed a murder, got the murderer convicted and now is scared he is going to kill her. The killer is sent to jail, but whilst transporting him to another jail for execution, all hell breaks loose, some bird flies into the window of the van and flips the van over. The convict escapes and goes after the wife. I found this to be the best story of all, it was suspenseful, creepy and just plain good.
The last story takes place at SPL, which is some science research lab that is running tests and helping the government figure out the best course of action in the current situation. Where they are betrayed by the government when the worse occurs and they have a final goal of telling the world that the Earth is going to DIE. Obviously the government does not want the world go into a mass panic, so they try their best to stop the SPL.
There are many more sub stories that I really do not want to get into, mainly cause they aren't so important or that great. But I want to talk about all the goofy screw ups they have in this movie. First they screw up about the sun having enough mass to explode into a supernova. Also, they see fireballs coming out of the sun the moment it occurs. Now the sun is about 150 million kilometers away, which takes light 8 minutes to travel. Yep, they broke the fundamental law of physics, information can travel faster than light. Also when the fireballs hit the crazy scientist and the MILF, it vaporizes them but the wooden cabin he is staying in, is just partial on fire.
The last thing I want to bring up is the conclusion. Now I know a lot of you aren't going to watch this movie, so I do not care that I am about to spoil the movie here. The world is saved (surprise!) because the equation the mad scientist used was incorrect. Now I am not exactly sure how this works but it does. In the matter of weeks that the fire balls are hailing on the Earth and solar flares are destroying communications for man kind, the world goes into a third world state. Now after Luke Perry notices that one of the equations the mad scientist uses has + and not a -, all these world events stop and life retreats to its normal state. Biggest WTF of the year.
Overall, I wish this movie had less of story 1 and 3 and played more on story 2. I really liked story 2, and the other stuff was all a filler to me. I almost don't want to give it the label of Puneet's Terrible movie, but it was 3 long hours with horrible editing and way too many stories going on. If you want to waste 3 hours of your life and want something decently enjoyable, watch this. You might even have fun with it.
Too many stories is what I like to call a "too many mind" problem. ;)
