Scarface

To continue my gang related themed week, I watch the famous “Scarface” staring the amazing Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer. Now I had a good feeling about this movie, mainly because it feels like everyone in the world loves this movie; all my friends, co-workers and even those rappers on MTV’s crib. So naturally I was real excited going into this movie, maybe a bit too hyped up. I’ll try to keep my Cuban accent to a minimum due to the fact that I suck at it. Okay man? Click more after the jump.

The movie started off really well, with the interrogation scene with Tony Montana (Pacino) and some cops; it was well scripted and funny. And this reminds me, this movie has an amazing script. It has a lot of memorable quotes, generally interesting dialogue and at times can even be funny. I did catch myself chuckling a few times, the charisma that Tony has is absolutely lovely. I think this was my favourite part of the movie, just the general story and dialogue. It kept me hooked and clinging for more.

Tony Montana and his best friend Manny Ribera
Another point I want to bring up is the actors were awesome, both Pacino and Steven Bauer (Manny Ribera, Tony’s best friend and right hand man) played the role of Cuban gangsters real well and made the characters believable. I especially enjoyed being with Tony when he has his rise to fame and his downfall. I felt what he felt and the rollercoaster ride he sent me on, led me to both hate his character and cheer for him. I also really liked Tony's wife, Elvira Hancook (Pfeiffer), she is this cold, hard woman that takes no shit from anyone. She even has some racial tension with Tony before they 'fall in love'.
On the other hand, I did not enjoy the movie as much as I thought I would. Now this might be because I was hyped up to expect this movie to be amazing, and now that I think about it I really cannot find anything I hate about this movie. But I cannot kick the feeling that this movie was supposed to be better and I should feel better watching it, but I can’t. I know a few of you might disagree but overall, this movie wasn’t great or amazing. If anything I just want to replay GTA: Vice City and I had a lot more fun playing that and watching those cut scenes than I had with Scarface.
Overall, I think everyone should watch this movie. It has a good story, amazing acting and the best script I have heard in a long time. The movie does feel epic and I loved the rollercoaster ride you feel with Tony. But I just warn you that don’t go into this movie expecting greatness, just accept it. And yes, I thought that Donnie Brasco is a better movie, forget about it!
