Blown away with Departed

I’ve had this DVD literally on my TV cabinet since December of 2008. I’ve tried to watch it before, but I never found a convenient time. So when I finally popped this movie in my PS3 (Yes the PS3 is newer than the DVD and I must of moved the DVD to put in the PS3). I kind of wanted to beat myself up for not watching this movie sooner. I am not going to hide the fact that this movie is amazing, I think most of you know by now how good this movie is so there wasn’t really a point to keep it a secret. After the jump, I explain why I really liked this movie.

Point number one, the cast in this movie is amazing! I mean, it has Matt Damon, Mark Walberg (who I find is awesome as an actor, and I will get flamed for that comment), Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio, Vera Farmiga and Alec Baldwin. And all these fine actors and actress, I like them all, no complaints from me for the cast. And even better news, Martin Scorsese is the director; I think I am slowly finding that he is an amazing director. I have yet to watch a movie of his that I do not like.

Secret meeting at a adult movie, discussing who's the rat.

To be honest with you, I think the reason this movie shines so brightly is because of the characters and the actors are brilliant. Not sure what it is, but after this movie ended, I was determined to learn a Boston accent. But back to the movie, the characters were so awesome to watch interact with each other. You have: Billy (DiCaprio) who is the undercover cop as a mafia member, and you see how he mentally is breaking down from all the pressures of seeing all these murders taking place in front of him. Colin Sullivan (Damon), who also a cop, but also serves for the mafia member. And instead of working for the SUI, he is helping out the Mafia head. And he is, Frank Costello (Nicholson) , and he is one bad-ass, tough as nails guy, and his facial expressions are creepy but really sell his role. And lastly we have Sgt. Dignam (Walberg) who is the rude, loud mouthed cop. And as little as he played in this movie, I still think he is so cool!

Point number two, is the obvious fact that the story and plot of this movie is amazing. I was so drawn in, and I haven’t felt this thrilled and hooked onto a movie in a long time. The last 30 minutes were so intense and I remember yelling at the TV, “C’mon!” as Billy and Colin are so close to figuring out who each other were. Scorsese does draw out the last moments really long, but not too long. It felt suspenseful but not frustrating, if you catch my drift. And now because I am used to Scorsese way of filming, I wasn’t too agitated by the pacing of the film. During my review of “Taxi Driver”, I was real thrown away by the pacing, but I bet if I saw that movie now. I’d appreciate it a little bit more.

Another meeting with the Families.

Final point is that the final scene was such a shocker. I mean, I should have expected it from seeing the other Scorsese movies, but BAM it really hits you in the face. It felt like it came out of nowhere but it was needed to tie the movie up in a nice bow. The ending felt even more of a shock because the movie started to slow down a bit to build up the suspense. It got me really thinking about the movie again, and going, “Oh that make sense, because that dude was like that dude and he was doing that thing about that dude”.

There is without a doubt I loved this movie, and would totally want to watch this movie again, and Taxi Drive and other Scorsese movies. I totally dig his way of directing a movie, and I really want to see “GoodFellas” now. But that will come in time. If you haven’t seen “Departed” yet, go see it, you will not regret it!

  1. I get a kick out of the last shot in the film with the rat running across the railing. Wrapping things up in a bow, indeed.

I gotta say I enjoyed Baldwin's character a lot. I got a chuckle at him being pumped over the Patriot Act allowing him to get the information he needed.

And no mention of Martin Sheen, c'mon Puneet! I guess with a cast that big and well known, you're bound to miss mentioning someone.
