Force Fed Films: Green Lantern: First Flight

For the folks that know Jim, I think you can agree that Jim is a pretty big Green Lantern fan. So for this weeks Forced Fed Films, he gave me “Green Lantern: First Flight”. The great thing about this movie is that it is a cartoon, and really gives it that “Saturday morning cartoon” feel. I wasn’t too sure if this movie was going to prep me for the upcoming movie, or just a general intro into the world of Green Lantern. Anyways, click read more to see what I did and did not like about the movie.

The story is pretty bare bone; it starts off with Hal Jordan taken away whilst he is still in a flight simulator. As the simulator lands in the middle of the desert he meets up with a dying alien. As the alien dies, the green ring he possess leaves him and chooses Hal Jordan to be the next Green Lantern. With his new powers, he is greeted by more Green Lanterns, one of them is Sinestro. As Hal is taken under Sinestro’s wing to learn to be a proper Lantern, Hal questions Sinestro’s ways of providing Justice. This is where it all goes wrong. I won’t spoil the rest of the movie, but it gets good.

Sinestro and Hal Jordan

First and foremost, I love the overall feel of this movie. Like I said before, I get a strong “Saturday morning cartoon” vibe and I like it, even though this movie may not be for little children with all the blood and few foul words being cursed. I love the art style and animation, they were well done and just what I expected. I also liked the action in this movie, it is thrilling and well-choreographed. Last thing, I really liked how this movie presents the origin story, it isn’t overwhelming and even a casual person can easily get into this. I am not too big into comics, but this was perfect. I got some of the story, characters and basic universe of Green Lantern and I didn’t have to read 30+hours or spend over $100.

The only real bad part of the movie is that it is short. It only ran for 77 minutes, and I really did want more. I would have also liked to seen more boss fights, even though the last fight was epic. I really cannot think of anything I hated about this movie or even disliked. I guess the anime-ish behaviour of the characters were a bit of a turnoff, but that isn’t really anything important, just a personal annoyance.

I’ll leave you with my final thoughts and they are this. I liked the movie, it was real interesting and I am glad I got to know more about the DC universe. I am willing to get more into the Green Lantern franchise before the big movie hits theatres. And for anyone that is interested, go see this movie before Green Lantern hits theatres.
