Fanboys

The plan was to watch “Brotherhood of the Wolf”, but I wasn’t able to get a copy of it fast enough. So I decided to watch that tomorrow and today I would watch “Fanboys”. I’ve always had a slight interest in this movie, mainly because it has Jay Baruchel and it’s about nerds. But the movie is more than just a nerd movie; it is an epic tale about 4 friends that go on a road trip for the dying friend. Click more to see what I thought of this heroic tale.

To dive further into the story, four friends: Eric (Sam Huntington), Linus (Chris Marquette), Hutch (Dan Fogler) and Windows (Baruchel) have been friends since high school and after a college party they reunite. Though Eric doesn’t fit in anymore, he broke out of his nerd life to be a successful car salesman. AS he tries to reconnect his lost friendship with his best friend Linus, he later finds out that Linus has only a few months to live before his cancer takes him over. And his last dying wish is to see Star Wars Episode 1: Phantom Menace before he leaves this Earth. Their ultimate goal is to road trip from Ohio to California, break into Lucas Ranch and get the copy of the new Star Wars.

The gang stuck in Lucas Ranch's garbage disposal room.

Easily the best parts about this movie are all the pop-culture references on anything and everything Star Wars, even hating on those damn trekies. And because I recently saw Episodes 4, 5 and 6, the jokes were really funny. I especially loved the feud between the Trekies and Star Wars fans. And I’ll admit Seth Rogan can pull off a great Trekie! He also plays a pimp, which is okay I guess but nothing compares to him in a yellow shirt. And to boot, William Shatner makes a cameo, and I can’t say much about his role (might spoil the movie) but his cameo was well done and would have liked to see more of him.

Though I can’t point out anything terribly wrong with this movie, there are times that the movie hits a low and can get slightly boring. Also, even with all the Star Wars jokes (which are funny) there aren’t a lot of original jokes. So if you haven’t seen any of the Star Wars movies, there will be a lot of unfunny bits that you won’t get.

Overall, the movie is a fun treat to watch, especially if you are a geek/nerd. The movie really shows you how awesome Star Wars and Star Trek fans really are, how they can get into fights about story plots and if Luke’s kiss with Liea was incestuous our not. Even though this won’t be the funniest movie you watch all year, it is defiantly one you shouldn’t skip on.

Damn it feels good to be a (Trekie) ganster
