Most people in North America seem to forget that the Brits have a large selection of movies. They even have their own sub genre; British Humor. And do I love British Humor. Today I watched The Full Monty that stars Robert Carlyle and Mark Addy (one of my favourites). And the movie is quite funny, that also has a lot of serious topics being discussed in the movie. My full view after the jump.
Basically the plot of the movie is that; six guys from Sheffield, during the downward economic spiral of the industrial North, need to make money to survive. And what is the easiest way of making money? Male stripping. I found the plot funny enough when I was going through Netflix, and it was British so I said why not. The movie has a lot of funny parts in it, but sometimes it was hard to follow some of their accents, than again I bet the Brits think us Canadians have weird accents, eh? I found the flow of the movie slow at first, but it picked up pace early on and my grin, turned into a smile and into a full on laughter.
But between the laughter the movie has a serious undertone to it. It deals with the obvious unemployment problems of Sheffield, the rights that fathers have with their kids after a divorce (seen with Gaz), homosexuality and the problem of getting it up. There is even a small scene with one of the main character attempting to kill himself. Strong stuff indeed, really puts into through what a recession can do to typical blue collar men and their families. But even with all this serious scenes, the movie is still out right funny.
The acting is great, with all six main characters being completely believable. The plot is solid and the ending is a real feel good ending. There isn't much to hate about this movie, only thing I struggled with was the British humour and the accents, but was easy to get over in a few minutes. Overall this movie is totally a great movie and recommended it to everyone that likes to laugh.
Glad you enjoyed it, it's one of the better British movies. I actually gifted this to Steve the old TRS editor on his visit to the UK.
