The story of this movie is quite interesting and enjoyable. It has Sam (Swayze) and his beloved girlfriend Molly (Moore) who moved into their new apartment in New York city. Sam works at a successful big bank and lives a pretty happy lifestyle with this best friend Carl (Tony Goldwyn). One night after watching MacBeth, Sam and Molly walk back to their new home, but get mugged by a street thug. After a short fight, Sam is shot and killed on scene, but here's where it gets interesting. Sam's soul doesn't go to heaven right away, instead he is trapped in purgatory. He stays on Earth to protect Molly from all evils and the misfortune thrown in their way. The only person that can communicate with Sam is Oda Mae Brown (Goldberg). And thats when the movie starts getting real good.
I do love the story in this movie, it's different and not like all the other love/romance movies. You may not see it right now, but there is a lot of chemistry being shared between Swayze and Moore, it really shines. But they are not the best actors(ess) in this movie. Goldberg is the best part of this movie by far. She plays this crazy, attitude filled "Spirit Adviser/psychic", she is funny and so entertaining to watch. Another side character who I liked was the crazy subway ghost played by Vincent Schiavelli.
Intense moment while making clay pots!
Now the bad: there really isn't much to hate in this movie. I thought the special effects as Sam as a ghost was over done but interesting. I thought the street thug (who surprisingly has a lot of screen time) and Carl were horribly played, just over acting and stupid facial impressions. And damn this movie was real cheesy when it came to the emotional love scenes. Good for girls, boring as fudge for me. Also, *SPOILERS* the man who set up the murder was so predictable and was given away halfway through the movie allowing for an interesting build up and "fight" scene (which was kind of lame). *SPOILERS ENDED*
Overall, I liked this movie. It didn't break any grounds, and I wouldn't want to watch it again. But Patrick Swayze was pretty awesome and the story was neat. If you want to watch a romantic ghost movie, I can't think of a better one (Hollow man is a close second) but rent this and watch it with your special someone. It isn't available on Netflix Canada, but I am pretty sure it would be on Netflix USA.
D list? Romance? My home this is!
