Aliens

I saw this last night but I was rather lazy and sleepy, so I am writing this up today. I was real excited to see “Aliens”, I really liked the first movie and I’ve heard only great things about this one. To my surprise James Cameron was a huge part of this movie, this kind of explains why this movie was real good. Even though I am not a huge fan of Cameron, I can easily understand why he is admired so heavily, he makes good movies. I was just hoping that this movie had corrected some of the parts I did not like in the first one. Click the jump to see how I reacted to the changes to the movie.

You bet some hot alien ass this movie is awesome! This movie corrected everything I hated about the first one. I mean everything, it is like they read my mind from 1980’s and told everything that I hated to James Cameron to make a movie just for me. Thanks Mr. Cameron you are pretty awesome as well. But in all seriousness, I am glad this movie just picked up from where it last ended, with Ripley in stasis. There is no boring BS intro, just BAM you are in this movie.

Boss stage: Destroy Queen Alien.

Another change that I liked in this movie is the fact that this movie turned into a suspenseful thriller into a big epic war movies. It was the Earth Army versus the Aliens. And incorporated with war movies are the amazing action/shooting scenes. I am glad this movie was a lot faster pace and in your face. Especially when these Aliens are coming out of walls, and dropping from ceiling tiles in hordes. I was overwhelmed with all the aliens on screen, which is not a bad thing at all. I was so glad this movie went the way it did.

Oh don’t get me started on the script, it was amazing. There were so many one liners that I loved. A lot of Hudson’s words were just gold: “They’re coming outta the walls. They’re coming outta the goddamn walls.” And talking about Hudson, what a god damn wimp, it really made the squad a bit more laughable when a scientist has bigger balls than an army brat. I also really liked the leader Hicks, mainly ‘cause he was the smart and strong leader of the group. But he wasn’t over the top macho man. And to top it off, he didn’t have a romantic relationship with Ripley. Which I was so glad to see, I had a feeling they might find some feelings for each other, and that would of totally ruined the movie. Because you know how likely it is to fall in love in midst of an alien attack. “Oh baby I want to be with you forever, I love you so much. The acidic alien blood can’t separate us, because we are that deeply in love.” This bullshit is the reason why love stories in action movies suck. And my favourite line, “Asshole and elbows!”

Game Over man, GAME OVER!

I honestly cannot find one thing I did not like in this movie. I can keep going on and on about how I loved it, the only thing I found a bit amusingly goofy was the final boss fight between the Queen alien and Ripley. As they both fall into this pit that leads to outer space, the pressure difference is sucking both Ripley and the Queen out of the ship. Now the Queen is holding onto Ripley’s leg for dear life, at the same time Ripley is holding onto a ladder bar with her arm. I was just thinking to myself, man that sucking power should have ripped her arm in two. But meh, that is just a stupid thing I noticed. Nothing I hold against the movie.

So overall, I loved this movie a lot. It is definitely in my top 10 movies I’ve seen ever. I doubt there is anyway the third instalment can be a better than this one. But I am still kind of excited to see where this series goes.

  1. Set your expectations lower for Alien 3. It may seriously piss you off in the first 10 mins, but don't let that cloud any feelings for the rest of the movie.

  2. Hmmm, we shall see. I am not so forgiving sometimes.

  3. Aliens 3 grows on you after additional viewings but it's not the same movie as Aliens at all. The setup at the beginning will piss you off as Wesley mentioned but the end is a nice pay-off.
