So the winner of our Horror Poll was “Event Horizon”, and because Jim’s already seen this creepfest, I am the one looking at it. I am quite excited to see this movie; it has horror and sci-fi themes laced in it. Two things I absolutely love so I really couldn’t wait for this. This movie was also recommended to my best friend for the longest time, so I am pleased to tell him that this movie was the biggest pile of … Well I’ll tell you how I feel after the jump.
I’m really not too sure how I feel about this movie, but I really liked the basic story of the movie. It starts off in the future where they send this space ship in 2040 named ‘Event Horizon’ or ‘the point of no return’. Now this vessel just disappeared near Neptune one day with no trace. After seven years, evidence shows the ship is back so Earth sends a search and rescue team to find out what happened. As the team gets there, all hell breaks loose in this thriller mystery and the crew needs to defy physics to survive.
GRR LOOK AT ME, I AM SUPPOSE TO BE SCARY
And with that pretty awesome story the movie starts off fine, but 10 minutes in the movie starts to crap out. It’s these damn scenes filled with people with red eyes just staring that pisses me off. It isn’t scary and it seemed so out of place. And this happens across the whole length of the movie, you could just be sitting there and bam! A flash of your wife sitting with her emotionless with her eyes out. I guess it was put in there to scare someone, but it just felt weak and cheesy. Oh and talking about cheesy, why were the special effects so terrible? I mean it was made in 1997, I thought the special effects in some of the movies in Sci-Fi Movies on a Budget were better.
But wait, there is a saving grace and his name is Morpheus, err I mean, Laurence Fishburne. But sadly, I hated the role he played as Captain Miller, the leader of the search and rescue operation. He was an arrogant asshole, there would be no good way for me to believe that he would be appointed leader. Let alone his acting was terrible, maybe his character wasn’t supposed to be an arrogant asshole, but a strong compassionate leader, because out of the blue that is what his character started to become like. But then he goes back to being a fucking asshole, his role switches more times than a possession in basketball. And I won’t even go into the other actors, because they were also as bad.
Doctor Weir ... FROM HELL!
I did find a few good things about the movie, and they were the small but cool horror scenes of ‘the other side’. This other side is supposed to be even worse than hell itself, with flashes of cannibalism, bondage, torture and I think I saw some rape in there. But this brings up another complaint; the scenes were so short and small that I barely could make out what was happening. And they were at the end of the movie too, so too little too late.
I also did like the ending with Doctor Weir (Sam Neil) turning into a demon, he looked awesome. He had slashes and cuts on his face, looked real demonic. And he only was there for the last 15 minutes of the movie. So again, any kind of good thing about this movie is always followed up by a complaint. The ending kept me guessing on if they finally were safe or not was fun but nothing great.
To summarize, this movie wasn’t fun for me. The story could have been better, but the plot let it down. The acting sucked, the special effects were cheap and tasteless. I understand this is a cult movie, something I won’t enjoy because I am not part of that mindless boring cult. But at least the ending was good, ‘cause well it ended the movie.
