Tripping out with Alice in Wonderland

After watching this movie, I feel like I am withdrawing from a near fatal overdose of Vicodin. To say “Alice in Wonderland” was a trippy movie to watch is a slight understatement, it was full of visual wonders and eye candy. I was pleased to watch this in beautiful 720P on my TV, but I wasn’t too sure if the rest of the movie was as good as the visuals. Just like the feeling of withdrawing from Vicodin, I felt groggy and irritated as I watched this film. Click more to read my complaints and issues.

Even though this movie stars the amazing Johnny Depp as Tarrant Hightopp, a.k.a the Mad Hatter (a favourite local pub of mine) and future Catwoman, Anne Hathaway, I thought the acting was subpar. I expect amazing facial expressions from Depp especially after seeing him do so well in Pirates of the Caribbean, his face was so uninspiring and dare I say it, boring and he was the Mad Hatter! I thought Alice (Mia Wasikoska) was the best actor of this film, but in no way great. The Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) did not feel like a cold hearted wench nor did the White Queen (Hathaway) sell her role as an elegant and innocent yet vengeful Queen, though I thought she was mind-blowingly beautiful. Overall, I was still disappointed.

MY EYES ARE BLOWING UP 'CAUSE THIS IS SO DAMN AMAZING.

Now I come to the script and story, and can you believe it was even worse than the acting? I felt they really fell short with the story; it wasn’t as imaginative as I would have liked. Also the script was bland and not at all interesting. Here was another bother I had, why was Cheshire Cat presented as a dim-witted boring cat? He is my favourite character in the novel, why did he suck harder than a hoover vacuum? Another thing, why did the English feel snobby and ugly? I get the point that they were acting out as if this took place in Ye Ol’ London, but it fails hard.

The only pleasing part of this movie is the visual; I was at awe at how beautiful everything was. The costume and makeup was just amazing, I loved how Mad Hatter looked and really showed how crazy that mofo is. The digital effect on the Red Queen was interesting to say the least, not by far in a negative way. And the creatures, from Chesire to the Jabberwocky were so cool and magnificent. And I cannot say this enough, damn Hathaway looked gorgeous!

To summarize, I would not recommend this movie to anyone, it was bland and boring to watch. This movie suffers from the “Odyssey Effect”, where movies concentrate too much on how amazing this movie looks and forgets that movies also need to be interesting. Even if you have read and are a fan of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”, this movie does not do the book any good and I tell you to avoid this movie with all cost.

  1. 2 I agree... Visuals alone don't make the movie trippy... it needs to mess with your head as well (which this movie doesn't do enough)

  2. From what I understand the fact that the plot was pretty straight forward and unoriginal was the main reason this movie honked. Haven't seen it myself but I was never interested in it to begin with.

Probably doesn't help that people who went in expecting it to follow the book would not get what they want.
