Viking 101: How To Train Your Dragon

So I have been meaning to watch this movie for a long time, and with my week filled with depressing movies and M. Night, I needed a little break from horseshit. So I decided to watch "How To Train Your Dragon", and boy the Norse in me (very little) was quite excited for this movie! For those who don't know, I have a little fetish for Vikings, not sure what it is but damn, bear skin coats and meed really hardens my Mjollnir. And I expected this movie to be a cutesy/family movie, and it is produced by Dreamworks, so I can't be to far off. See what I thought about it after the jump.

Okay, one quick questions: Why did the Vikings have Irish accents? I understand that this movie isn't based on any facts or traditional Norse mythology, but this made me so mad! And it genuinely irritated me a lot, it just felt out of place, in my own opinion. But besides that one flaw, this movie was sheer amazing! I loved it, there was nothing in this movie that I want to complain about (besides the Irish Vikings). It was funny, it was entertaining and the characters are so damn charming. Even though this movie was intended for a younger audience, I did not feel like I was watching a little kids movie at all.
Toothless the Dragon, Hiccup and his lady friend Astrid

I need to express my love for these characters, from the dragons to the Vikings, they are all so wonderfully created. I especially love the pokedex of dragons, where they all have their own weakness/strengths, special abilities and what to do when you meet them (Hint: Run ... Fast). The main dragon is Toothless who is a breed of a top-notch dragon and is legendary. He is caught by Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (voiced by Jay Baruchel), who is this scrawny whimpy little guy. As Hiccup approaches the roped dragon, he feels bad for it and instead of slaying it with his puny knife (more like a fork if you ask me), he lets the dragon go. Hiccup later finds out that Toothless is trapped in a large crater and cannot fly out cause of his damaged tail. And this is where the cute story kicks in: Hiccup meets Toothless, they are scared at first but than learn to live and learn and they become best of friends. Rinse and Repeat, stories been done before but it isn't old so I am not complaining.

The Vikings on the other hand, are just hilarious to watch. Just like every other dreamworks movies, all the characters are over exaggerated and just plain lovable. Hiccup's dad, Stoick the Vast, is a strong Viking, the exact opposite of his son and is embarassed by him. Gobber the Belch is Stoick the Vast's right hand man and runs the local blacksmith, he also trains mini Vikings to be dragon slayers. He is voiced by Jerad Butler, and he does a pretty swell job. There are so many more characters and if I started to name all the ones I loved, it would just be the cast list.

To summarize, I loved this movie with only one major flaw in this entire movie, this movie is for everyone. The story is fun, there is plenty of action, entertainment and obviously there is no lack of comedy in this movie. If you ever get the chance, do not miss watching this wonderful movie.
