Surprise Gem: St. Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold

Today presented itself with a movie I've never heard of before, but caught the attention of my friend with a trailer. That movie was none other than St. Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold. "It's got a pirate ship and school girls! What could possibly go wrong?" Yes, what indeed! At any rate we threw it on not knowing exactly what to expect. It has Collin Firth, can't be that bad can it? Hit the jump to see how it turned out.

The story is this. St. Trinian's is an all girls school filled to the brim with wacky characters of every kind you can imagine. It's sort of like a modern day mash up of The Goonies, Mean Girls, and 16 Candles. In this movie they discover that an ancient pirate ancestor of the Headmistress, Miss Fritton, hid a vast treasure that he stole from another Lord on the high seas Lord Pomfrey. 420 years later the current Lord Pomfrey is after the treasure and he'll stop at nothing to get his hands on it. This starts the girls of St. Trinian's to go on a treasure hunt to see who can find it first.

Unfortunately this is a sequel and I've never seen the first movie, so I'm sure there's some character connections or running jokes that I missed out on. There did seem to be some story threads that carried on from the first film, but they explained them quite well so I was able to get by not knowing any of the first film. One thing I can say, is that I certainly wouldn't mind seeing the first movie after seeing this one.

Rupert Everett makes Miss Fritton a hilarious new character
So it turns out that this movie was tons of good silly fun! Possibly the best cast member is Rupert Everett who plays the Headmistress Miss Fritton. Just as Robin Williams expertly pulled off Mrs. Doubtfire, Everett makes Camila Fritton come to life and totally believable and fun to watch. I also loved all the different characters and stereotypes the girls represented. There's the Emos, the Chavs Rude Girls, the Flammables, the Geeks, the Ecos, and the Posh Totties. There's also a selection of little kids that are crazy in their own ways, like teaming up to drive a Copper Mini speeding down the roads. They even have a rock band made up a girl from each group that pops up a few times, once for a fun musical number in a train station.

The Posh Totties are your typical tall blonde beauties that don't have a thought in their heads
This brings me to the music of the movie. I thought it was just really fun and quite a good soundtrack that fit the movie to a tee. From a cover of "Boys Keep Swinging" by one of the film's stars Sarah Harding to "I Predict a Riot" by Girls Aloud, and plenty of covers like "We've Got the Beat" by the school's band called Banned of St Trinian's.

I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who likes a good British comedy or any of the movies I listed at the top. The cast is massive but filled with character and there has to be something for everyone. Not to mention it's filled with hot girls in school girl outfits. As a closing, I'd like to leave you with a few words from Miss Fritton herself. "Some women are born great, Cleopatra, the Queen... me. Some become great... like Mother Teresa or Lady Gaga. Others have greatness thrust upon them... like Monica Lewinsky." So, which will you be?
