The third movie I watched on Sunday was the infamous “Clerks”. I actually had a bit of trouble getting this movie, until a friend forcfully gave it me. I’ve always heard great things from it, especially when Kevin Smith wrote and directed this movie. And I can base a lot of my life around this movie, mainly ‘cause I’ve worked at a convenience store for a good part of my life. So it would be nice to see a movie that I can so heavily relate to. Click more to read what I thought.
The story centralizes around Dante Hicks on a random Saturday. He is woken up by a phone call asking him to work the morning shift. After insisting he has the day off and isn’t up for it, he agrees and takes the shift. He goes through another day dealing with customers, a lousy relationship and his friend Randal. Who conveniently works next door at the video store. This pretty much sums up my life, I mean the movie fairly well.
Maybe I had my expectations too high for the movie. The first thing that really irritated me was that he movie was filmed all in black and white. I don’t care what the reasoning is I just don’t like it at all. Luckily this was the only annoying part of the movie. Everything else is a trip full of laughter and jokes.
Randal and Dante 'working'.
Dante is a special breed of man, he hates his job (like a lot of us) but for whatever the reason he can’t stand to get a complaint from the boss. And he is going through this breakdown when his ex-girlfriend is coming into town to meet up. Even though he is currently going steady with his current girlfriend who loves him dearly, but her dark secret irritates Dante enough to make him cheat on her. But the funniest character is Randal. He is the tell-it-how-it-is kind of guy. Doesn’t care about his job, even closing down his own video store to hang out with Dante next door, he is also rude and obnoxious to the customers. The two make a hilarious pair whatever the situation. And trust me, there is a lot of situations that make you go, WTF. And Dante wasn’t even supposed to be there today!
And I can’t forget about Jay and Silent Bob, more Jay than Bob. Jay deals drugs in front of the two stores, and from time to time he interacts with customers. And by far his skits always made me laugh so hard I was tearing up. He is that total d-bag everyone’s seen in front of stores just hanging out. Silent Bob’s role gets really good during the end of the movie, especially when he breaks down and dances with Jay, priceless!
Overall, I loved this movie. It is one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time. It is vulgar, over the top and crude but damn it feels good! I am rather sure that I am one of the last people on this Earth to this this film, but if you haven’t, go right away and check it out. It is just a funny movie that you don’t want to pass by.
I couldn't watch more than 15mins without turning it off. It was one of the worst 15mins of a movie I have ever seen.
ReplyDeleteAny particular reason you didn't like it? Because it did take a bit of time to get into the groove of the flick.
ReplyDeleteI found it funny when I watched it in the mid-90s. I revisited it last year and it was a bit of a chore. Still some funny moments but it feels more like a movie of its time rather than timeless.
