AVP: Alien Vs Predator

I finally got to see “AVP: Alien vs. Predator”, which was an interesting experience. Before actually watching AVP, I asked a few of my friends what they thought of it. And most of the responses I got were negative, so I tried not to keep my hopes up. But how can I not be psyched to see Aliens squaring off against Predators? Then again, I expected good things from Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, and Predator 2 and was sadly disappointed. Hopefully it’ll be a surprise and I will find this movie good … hopefully.

The main backstory to AVP is that Weyland Industries (created by Charles Bishop Weyland, a wealthy industrialist) hires a group of scientists, experts and a drilling crew to drill over 3000 feet below the artic. As the group go down and explore the pyramid in the deep underground they find out they aren’t alone. They are in the middle of a war between the Aliens and the Predators. They try their best to survive and make it out alive, but at the same time bring back evidence.

Though the main story isn’t so interesting, the events that follow are pretty good and catchy. And this isn’t even the best part of the movie, which is easily the action. Though at times the camera angles were bad, just the amount of Alien on Predator fighting was almost epic. I easily had a lot of fun with it. Especially the idea of the two epic creatures battling for it all that just added to the awesomeness.

I am more a fan of the Predator, mainly 'cause of how badass it is.

I only had a few complaints; one of them being the acting is terrible. Now I can usually overlook the terrible acting, but I could not find one thing to like about it. It wasn’t cheesy (in a good way), it wasn’t funny bad, just bland and boring. Another thing was the special effects are already getting a bit dated, and it was only released in 2004. This was only a year after The Matrix Revolutions, albeit that movie had the budget of nearly infinity. And my last complaint is that the movie starts off too slow for the first 45 minutes, and takes way too long to settle in.

Now for spoiler time, if you haven’t seen it and don’t want the movie to be spoiled for you. Stop reading here. Some of the best moments of this movie are the moments I need to spoil. Such as the relationship between one of the Predators and Alexa Woods, even though it is a bit cliché, it works. Also at the end of the movie when the alien pops out of the last predator that died and it has the weird four tooth predator mouth. How awesome was that!? I love the fact they continue the little trait that the alien has where it picks up bits of the host’s DNA. Lastly, when Alexa yells out “You ugly mother fucker” was way too cheesy and way too awesome.

Overall, I had fun with this movie. I thought the awesome action sequences, and cool moments easily outweigh the terrible acting and lackluster special effects. If you are a fan of the Aliens and Predator series, this is an easy movie to want to watch.

  1. OH...MY...GOD...

Please tell me I'm dreaming and that you didn't just say you enjoyed it and would recommend it to fans of either franchise.

    *pinches self*

    Nope, you said it...

  2. I assume you weren't a fan of AVP, and I don't blame you. I can totally see why people would hate it. But even after watching the movie, I didn't feel like I wasted my time. But this movie does not compare to Alien, Aliens or Predator.

  3. My biggest issue with it was that the sum of their parts should have been amazing and it wasnt. They should have based the movie on the comic series. That would have been more fun. There were even still humans in it.

  4. As a stand alone action movie, it is decent. As part of the Alien and Predator franchise, it fails. The little connections to the other movies are neat, that is why I think fans should watch this. But understandably wont like it.

  5. Now all that's left to watch is Aliens vs Predator: Requiem.

Most people say it's better than AVP but still pretty crappy. It's an R rated film so at least the gore is back.
