Poll Position: Best in Show

Last week our amazing readers decided to pick “Best in Show” from our selection of mockumentaries, even though I really wanted to see “Man Bites Dog”. But obviously the masses cannot be ignored, so we watched what you wanted us to watch. Now mockumentaries can be difficult to film, they are obviously fake but try their hardest to seem real. And obviously, humour is the biggest part of any mockumentary. But enough of what a mockumentary is, here is what I thought.

The movie takes place in the midst of a huge dog competition called the Mayflower National and all our crazy characters have entered their beloved dog. All the dogs are unique in their own special ways, but what is even more unique are the owners/breeders themselves. They are a kooky bunch of people. But we are shown the characters at their breaking point, so the silly antics they get themselves into are for our enjoyment.

We have Willard commentating (incorrectly) with his co-host ... some forgettable guy.

Now the characters are supposed to steal the show here, they should be interesting, unique and most importantly funny. Now that shouldn’t be too hard when the cast is filled with comedians from Eugene Levy to Catherine O’Hara and even the very funny Fred Willard. But here is where we come to the first problem, all the dog owners/breeders suck, and are terribly unfunny. I couldn’t find any joy coming from them; it was like watching a terrible sit-com with no comedy and a terrible situation. The only saving grace is Willard, who plays a commentator for the dog shows. His crude comments are not only funny but insensitive. But what’s the point? At most he was a supporting character.

I believe mockumentaries better feel real like” Blair Witch Project” or at least be funny like “This is Spinal Tap”. Not sure what else I can say about Best in Show. It lacks funny characters, the idea of a dog show is absurd enough to make this movie potentially funny but nothing comes from that. And in the end of the day I felt that I just wasted my time. I don’t really remember anything about this movie, and I just saw it less than an hour ago. It was hugely forgettable and a large waste of anyone’s time.

Now the reason I give this movie my prestigious “Puneet’s Terrible Movies” title because it fails in many aspects, but most importantly I didn’t laugh once through this whole movie. If anything, it killed my mood, I was happy because the sun was out and I took a nice drive home. I put this on, and it made me feel depressed. Even with Willard, I only smiled less than 5 times and laughed 0. Let alone the fact I wouldn’t want anyone else to see this movie, there is absolutely nothing good about this.
