If I said that I was watching a movie with Keanu Reeves, in which time travel occurs. I am rather sure most of you would assume I would be talking about one of “Bill & Ted’s Adventures”. Sadly that isn’t the case today. But I won’t lie to you, I was looking forward to watching this movie a lot more than The Notebook. But as I found a liking to The Notebook, I thought it would be hard for “The Lake House” to impress me now.
Both Alex and Kate find themselves living in the same little lake house, but not together. After moving into a lake house his father created, Alex finds a note in his mailbox noting to forward all mail to the previous owner’s new address. And this is where it gets fun, the writer of that letter actually sent it 2 years from the future by Kate. Yep, the two are communicating through time instantaneously. As they try to understand how this is actually happening, they slowly fall for each other’s words. As their relationship gains some tractions, Kate discovers a big problem that could jeopardize the chance of them meeting.

Bullock shares more than a house with Alex, the dog is a key to him.
Is it troublesome that I get a lot of the movie “Speed” from what I watch today? Both Reeves and Bullock are in this movie, the scenario they are in is ridiculous and a bus has something to do with both movies in a big way. And to top it all off, I had to stop thinking to enjoy both movies. This movie made absolutely made no logical sense; there are a lot of paradoxes that really don't make the story a whole. But you know what, it is a romance movie so I kind of had to watch this movie knowing that it’ll make no sense and just accept things to ‘make sense’. There were a few things I liked about this movie. Firstly, I just liked the whole time travel thing. It definitely gave a unique twist to a generic love story. They couldn’t just meet up, because Alex would have to wait 2 years to see Kate. And if he tried to jump the gun to see her, she wouldn’t have an idea who he was.
Secondly, I digged the scenes where they would write to each other. It wasn’t so much for the script, it was more the cool cinematography that was shown during these scenes. They were great to watch and the effects they use were interesting.
Lastly I like to note that the few twist they throw in the movie caught my guard down a few times. Spoiler time, if you don’t want to know, skip to the next paragraph. I realized early on that Alex was dead during the time Kate was sending the messages. And when Alex didn’t show up for their date, this just confirmed it. But when Kate ‘saves’ his life by telling him to avoid the bus. I didn’t see that coming, and in retrospect I probably should have. Than it got me thinking more about the paradox that was created. And this lead me to the problems of the movie.

First time they meet up, Kate hasn’t moved into the lake house yet.
The biggest problem was that, as hard as I tried to ignore the problems that came up with the time travel, and whenever I noticed the problem, it took me out of the movie. Second thing that bugged me was the acting performance of both Reeves and Bullocks wasn’t stellar. Saying it was good would be too nice of me to say. The lack of emotions really bugged me, and I can generally tolerate terrible acting. But when it comes to a romance film, you can’t skip out on the actor's performance. But at the end of the day, I still enjoyed The Lake House. Overall, it wasn’t as good as The Notebook, but the ending was a lot more dramatic and enjoyable in The Lake House. And The Lake House offered more cheap thrills for me to enjoy. If you can ignore some of the time travel paradoxes and sub par acting, this movie is a real interesting watch. But thank god I am done with lovey dovey movies. I need to watch a testosterone filled action soon to balance out my Manly chemical Ph.
