Now Playing: Bridesmaids (2011)

After hearing so many good reviews of Bridesmaids, I really wanted to see it for myself. I'm not really sure how I did it, but I even convinced a few buds to come along and see it with me. This is definitely not the normal kind of movie I would normally check out in the theater, but hearing about all the raunchy gross-out comedy that inhabits the film sealed the deal. Hit the jump to see if it's all it's cracked up to be.

I don't really want to get into the story of the movie, as this movie is really more about the comedy. The whole movie revolves around the preparation of the wedding and how the Maid of Honor, Annie's life is simultaneously crumbling around her. The best part is that all these terrible things are all handled comedicly instead of getting really depressing.

The star that brings Annie and her misery to life is Kristen Wiig. She is a comedic talent like few I've seen, and her sense of timing for all the jokes is dead on. She also does all that standard chic-flick stuff pretty good to, being totally believable as the childhood friend of the bride, who is played by Maya Rudolph. Of all the side characters though, I can easily say that Melissa McCarthy totally stole every scene she was in as Megan. In fact I really wish she was in the movie far more. She's like the Zach Galifinakis from The Hangover. Definitely not the star of the movie, but amazing and funny in every scene she's in. For the most part, I found the other bridesmaids uninteresting, other than I suppose the evil Hellen. I quite like the pun with the character's name too, she really is a hell on Earth.

Kristen Wiig says it's time for a "Wine & Magazine" party!
The comedy was great, however, it's not quite as gross as I had envisioned it to be. I was imagining Superbad levels of disgusting, but it really wasn't like that... too much. There are definitely moments and scenes that do start to cross that line, but most of the comedy isn't like that. Also, there are the few slower sections where it gets more touchy feely, and for some going to the theater for the sickening comedy probably won't find these moments entertaining. Luckily, there's plenty of drinking, swearing, and mentions of a certain bodily function to satisfy all the fart humour-loving guys in the audience.

I definitely think this movie is worth seeing, and it's actually opened up my eyes to the possibility of seeing more rom-coms in the theater. Really I just need to see more comedies in theaters in general, as I definitely have a far better experience when it's in a crowd. And speaking of crowds, the theater was absolutely jam-packed with men and women today to see Bridesmaids. Congrats to Kristen Wiig for a preformance well done and also as a co-writer for Bridesmaids. I think we'll be seeing a lot more of her in the years to come, and I can't wait to see what she does next.

  1. So listen... I have been staunchly against seeing this movie since I saw the trailer just about a week ago because it just didn't look like my kind of humor. And I'm sticking to that - it's definitely not going to be my favorite kind of movie... BUT... this review is awesome! Possibly one of your best yet. Kudos ;)
