Red: Werewolf Hunter (2010)

As a bit of a change of pace, I decided to check out a made-for-tv movie, Red: Werewolf Hunter. As is the case of course, it was a little difficult finding a movie poster for something that doesn't have a movie poster. Go figure. "Red" was produced by Syfy and stars internet phenomenon Felicia Day. As a descendant of the original Red Riding Hood, her family hunts the remnants of werewolf packs in the modern day. You'll find my opinion of the movie after the jump.

The story behind Red: Werewolf Hunter is unfortunately pretty bland. Virginia Sullivan (otherwise known as Red) is a federal agent, and met Nathan in training and fell in love, and they are now engaged. Now she's bringing him home to meet her family and explain what she really does in full. Unfortunately the instant they arrive werewolf trouble starts up and Nathan is attacked, and infected. Now the race against the clock is on, as the Sullivan family tries to deal with the rising werewolf attacks, as well as cure Nathan of his curse before it becomes permanent.

Felicia Day
Felicia Day is a gorgeous woman, and she gives a pretty good performance. She is able to give Virginia quite a bit of a toughness and an edge which is necessary for the role. She regularly wields guns and knives and other weapons and I did get the impression that she knew what she was doing with them. I was a little surprised by this as I'm so used to seeing Felicia Day as more of a cute and innocent gamer from the web series The Guild. It was interesting to see her in a different kind of show for a change, and I'd definitely like to see her in more.

Along with Felicia, Red: Werewolf Hunter had Kavan Smith as Nathan, and Stephen McHattie as the head werewolf Gabriel. Most will probably recognize Kaven from his role as a head security officer on StarGate: Atlantis, and due to this I quite enjoyed his role in the film. If I'm being honest though, his character was let down by a pretty poor script. I still think he's a good actor though and he did well with what he had. Now Stephen McHattie has been in tons of stuff, and he's probably the heavy hitter of the movie. He makes the big bad wolf true to his name in attitude and presence in my opinion. The only thing that possibly lets him down as the villain, are the special effects on the wolves.

The Sullivan Hunters really like leather.
Part of my expectations on the effects had to be tempered due to the movie obviously having a smaller budget since it's a TV project rather than a big Hollywood blockbuster. If you keep that in mind, what's on display is pretty good. In particular, I thought the ending was pretty good as far as effects go, but for the majority of the movie it seemed like certain special effects and shots of werewolves were reused quite a bit. Namely, one scene from very early in the movie kept popping up over and over nearly a dozen times in these weird, pointless flashback sequences.

If you're a big Felicia Day fan, this is probably a must watch movie. If you're a big werewolf fan, it might also be something you might want to consider watching. Werewolves are probably one of my favorite of all the movie monsters. There really aren't much in the way of werewolf movies these days, or maybe I should say, good werewolf movies. Due to that I'd probably recommend Red: Werewolf Hunter, with the one reminder again that this is a made-for-tv project. Keeping that in mind, I think it should be a decently enjoyable experience.
