Now Playing: THOR (2011)

I finally got the chance to see Thor today. The funny thing was that I waited until Sunday so that a certain friend could see it with us, but then he told us he saw it on Saturday night and then never showed up today. He even messaged us to say he'd still come. But he has a history of deciding to not come but not telling anyone he isn't after he just said he would. Oh yeah, I'm supposed to be talking about Thor. Sorry about that. It was AMAZING! Hit the jump and I'll tell you why I loved it so much.

The story was pretty basic as they have to spend a lot of time introducing the characters and bringing you into this part of the Marvel universe. Thor is on track to become king of Asgard, the realm of the gods which he lives in. The only problem is that he is far too proud and rash and his actions start a war between Asgard and the land of the Ice Giants, Jotunheim. For his crimes of disobeying his king and father Odin, he has his powers stripped away and banished to the realm of Midgard, which is known as Earth to us. Action and saving the day follow.

Thor faces off against the Destroyer
I loved how well they captured the characters and the world of Asgard. When I first heard they were making a movie based on the Thor comics, I had no idea how they would make the rainbow filled world of Asgard actually look cool in a live action movie, but they modified it in just the perfect way that did just that. Even the Rainbow Road looked cool, and was still rainbowy!

I thought the acting was really good, and the comedic timing worked well for me once Thor goes to Earth. He's just so proud, and he's always shut down at just the right moment. I really liked the entire cast and thought they all did a great job. Chris Hemsworth was great as Thor, and Natalie Portman was wonderful as the love interest, as expected. Anthony Hopkins was a great Odin, and what surprised me was how powerful they made him appear. They must have really put a lot of padding on him, but I totally bought it. And also Tom Hiddleson was great as Loki. You know what, I could just list every character and say they're all great, but just take my word for it and I'll move on.

Thor and Jane Foster share a tender moment
While the action, for the most part, was really good, I did have one problem with it. A lot of the fighting, especially at the start, was in far too close to the action. This lead to a lot of shaky-cam-itis. It wasn't exactly shaky-cam, but it had a similar effect. At least the CG and effects were all top notch and nothing came across as fake to me.

In conclusion, I say everyone should go see Thor. But then I'm a nut for this kind of thing. Even so, the action was really pretty good and lots of great CG. Even the love story is decent and isn't too intrusive, or too lame that it doesn't belong in the film at all. Also, stay after the credits for a teaser, just like ALL the Marvel movies. Now I just have to wait to see Captain America to finish the build up to The Avengers next year. One last thing, check out the cool concept art for Thor below!
