Predators (2010)

I finally got around to seeing “Predators”, and if you forgotten this was because I started to watch trilogies a while back and I really wanted to finish off the Predator trilogy (Predator and Predator 2). I wasn’t too sure what to expect, I didn’t like number 2 all that much, but I adored the first movie. Thinking that this would just be another flop, I just lowered my expectation just hoping to get anything good out of this movie. After the jump I explain to you the rise and fall of this movie.

I’d like to say, I really like this story. I mean really, really like it! Basically a group of humans are dropped into a jungle of what they later find out on an alien planet. These humans must do all they can to survive from what is hunting them. Little do they know what they are up against, but with a little bit of investigative work they find out that they are just game to these ‘Predators’. Did I tell you I really like this story, it is just wacky but it is just so cool!

The selected few with a Yakuza member to a Russian Spetsnaz memeber.

Besides the story, what I also liked about this movie is that it takes place in the jungle again. I remember loving jungle environment in the first movie, it gives this primal atmosphere. And with the jungle comes the booby traps, and they, for whatever reason, are the coolest. Another great thing is the action; it is plentiful and very entertaining. There are a lot of gun fights, hand to hand combat and a great final battle which I won’t spoil right now. If you do want to hear more about this, scroll all the way down.

What I found real neat was that we got to know more about the Predator race. We were left with a bit of knowledge in the second movie when Mike Harrigan meets the few in the ship. Mostly about their society and the equipment they use. Though in this movie, we see more of how they prey on their game; their tactics, their weaponry and even their evolution. It was great to see how the human team were finding more and more about the species that were after them.

Want diversity? Yakuza with a Katana vs. Predator.

But this movie isn’t perfect, there are moments of this movie that were slow and went off pace. And the love chemistry between Royce (Adrien Brody) and Isabelle (Alice Braga) was awkward. And when it came to the characters, it felt like the director was trying to reproduce the same basic team from the first movie. Now this isn’t all that bad, too bad it wasn’t too original. I did like Noland’s (Laurence Fishburne) little bit in the movie. But my favourite character was easily Edwin (Topher Grace), mainly ‘cause he was the odd one out. Wasn’t an army man or a serial killer, just a doctor.

As a whole, I liked this movie mainly due to the story and the action. The story elements of the Predators were cool and gave the movie a cherry on top. This is obviously better than the second movie, and almost up there with the first movie. If you like action movies, this is a total watch and you shouldn’t miss this one. Especially the end of the movie, it really joins this movie into a complete picture.
