Now Playing: Thor

Second movie of the day I saw was the all mighty “Thor”! I was fairly looking forward to this movie. Not so much as I am a comic book fan, but because I am a huge fan of Norse Mythology. Now I know that this movie was for the comic book character and their stories differ from the myths. But it still made me squeal when I heard I was going to see Heimdall, Odin, Loki and obviously Thor. And yes, I am glad I did not see this opening night, did not want another stupid crowd to watch this with. But click more to read what I thought of the movie.

Story is centralized around Thor (duh) and about his trials and adventures through the nine realms. As Odin’s time in Asgard is dwindling, he is forced to decide the next king of Asgard. With both Thor and his brother Loki up for Kingship, Odin chooses his first born Thor to take the throne. But just before Thor is given the power, the Ice Giants from Jotunheim try to steal one of the relics that Odin possess. Thor wages war on the Ice Giants and completely disagrees with his father’s orders. After nearly losing the battle, Odin is furious and banishes Thor to Midgard (Earth). Thor, in mortal form, has to somehow get back to Asgard to stop the evil that are trying to kill his father and destroying Asgard forever.

Not so strong as a mortal, are you Thor?!

Greatest part of this movie is hands down the action and the beautiful CGI, oh man I was drooling all over. There was so much action in this movie, from big to small, epic to even more epic; the battles were entertaining and grand. And I haven’t seen CGI done so well in a long time, they did an amazing job of portraying all the Gods, Giants, and even Bifrost Bridge was a total eye candy to watch. I especially loved the cool planetary scenes, and you see the universe. Oh man, this movie was so pleasant to look at.

Gladly the fun doesn’t stop there; I loved seeing all the Gods! My favourite is by far Heimdall, even in the myths he is amazing to hear about. He is the guardian that hears the blades of grass movie, and sees the faintest movement of a shadow as he guards the Bifrost Bridge. A neat little thing was that Hogun was played by Tadanobu Asano, who I saw in Ichi the Killer, and was pleasantly surprised to see him as a Norse God.

Guardian of the Worlds

There isn’t really much that I hated with the movie, though the humour wasn’t as par as other Marvel movies. Great to see Stan Lee does a joke, but besides that the humour was weak comparatively speaking. Especially when this movie gives such an Iron Man like vibe to it, luckily this doesn’t ruin the movie at all. And I wasn’t too keen on Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), her story with S.H.E.I.L.D’s was unnecessary, and it seemed like that was just put in there so Thor can have someone to love.

Overall, I really liked this movie for all it delivered. There was plenty of action and gratuitous amounts of beautiful CGI. Even if you aren’t a geek, go see this movie! You won’t regret it, and I really didn’t see anyone not enjoy the movie in theatres.

Again, as Jim pointed out. Stay after the credits ;)
