Finally saw The Bourne Identity

Some of you might know that I am a Matt Damon fan, but surprise surprise, I have not seen any of the Bourne movies. Why? Not sure, but I wanted to check them out, so I started in order with “The Bourne Identity”. Now whenever I had asked a friend what this movie was about the answers I got were: “Damon being awesome” or “Damon running away from the cops”. Yes a lot of my friends cannot give a proper synopsis. But after getting all three movies in Blu-Ray, I had to check them out. And here is what I thought of it.

The story starts off with a bunch of fishermen who find, who is later known as, Jason Bourne floating in the sea. As the crew keep him on the boat until he gets better, Bourne starts to realize the skills he possesses. But he does not know why he knows all this skill or even who he is, he has lost all his memory. As he tries to rebuild his memory, he remembers only one thing and that is his Swiss bank account number. This is where he goes and retrieves all his possessions trying to give himself clues for who he actually is. But to interrupt his search, he is hunted by the police, not sure why he runs away with a girl named Marie. The whole movie takes place with Bourne running away and finding out clues to who he actually is.

Silly car, you can't go down stairs! They don't even have lanes!

Hot dogs and chowder this movie was amazing. It was all I thought this movie was going to be; an action, thriller and mystery movie. And the action in this movie was phenomenal. It was fast paced, hard hitting and most importantly fairly realistic. As in, the fighting wasn’t a stretch to believe, I am sure there are people out there that can fight this awesomely. And to top it all off there was no terrible camera angles to ‘enhance’ the fight scene. I don’t remember a movie having such well scripted and flowing fight scenes since "Ong Bak". It was eye candy; I might even consider it porn by how well these fights were shot.

But don’t expect this movie to be a brain dead action movie, the suspense well balances the action. This movie is really good with keeping you out of the loop. You only knew what Bourne knew, and when he found a new clue, you found a new clue. So in the sense, you were solving the mystery with him. This leads me to point out this movie feels unpredictable and held my interest.

20 grand to Paris? Most expensive cabbie ever, if you ask me.

I should not forget about the acting, I mean it is hard to sell a mystery movie if the actors are terrible at what they do. And I might be biased in saying this but I thought Damon was hell of a Jason Bourne. He was cold, mysterious and deadly. He filled the screen with this aura of awesomeness and bad-assness. But I can’t leave out the character Maria who was played by Franka Potente (Run Lola Run). She provided the perfect sidekick to Bourne, and I was especially glad she wasn’t the damsel in distress.

I have so many favourite scenes in this movie, but by far was the great car chase scene with the Mini being chased by the cops. Even though this car can’t go fast, the tight streets of Paris (pronounced Pear-ee) make the chase very tight. And this car chase continues the fun formula similar to the fight scenes. There is no over the top action, just smooth and flowing action. Lastly, the best kill was when Bourne is chasing down one of the assassins in the forest. It was a great hunter vs hunter scene.

This movie is filled with amazingness. It might lack a deep story, but it makes up with fabulous action scenes and edge of the seat mystery. I still think I liked him more in Oceans Eleven, but he is no slump in this movie. I loved him and this movie a lot. Can’t wait till Supremacy.

  1. It took me re-watching this film a few times to realize that that second assassin you mentioned was Clive Owen. That's probably the first film I saw him in.

I think the only bad thing that I've ever heard about these films is that the infamous "shakey-cam" is used from time to time.

I still haven't seen the third movie in this trilogy either. I should really get on that.

  2. I really hate shakey cam a lot but it didn't annoy me in this film so much. It gets worst in the second one.
